Quick Guide Heritage Sector
a significant volume of construction work is repair and maintenance (or restoration and conservation) of traditional buildings - widely acknowledged as those built before 1919. In the last few years new National Occupational Standards (NOS), qualifications and training across the UK have been created to ensure that work carried out on these buildings is appropriate and does not create more damage to the building fabric unintentionally. In Scotland a new National Progression Award (NPA) for Conservation of Masonry has been created, as the majority of our built heritage is built of stone. It is currently being delivered at four further education centres (Glasgow Metropolitan, Edinburgh Telford, Moray and Orkney Colleges). It is effectively a bolt-on qualification and training programme to provide knowledge and skills to existing trades people and not a quick route to become a stonemason. Building from that, similar qualifications will follow for other trades in the future.
